We can't evade the price hikes in electricity tariffs, but we can play our part in supporting the cause to the education and conservation of the environment

“This is the first time we are collaborating with the Penang State Government to engage thousands of people in Penang to participate in Earth Hour,” said the Conservation Director of WWF-Malaysia, Dr Sundari Ramakrishna.
“We are pleased that Penang has decided to adopt this major initiative to drive greater awareness of green living among Penangites and tourists in the city on that day and beyond,” said Dr Ramakrishna. “The recent announcement on hike in electricity tariffs next year provides us with even more push to start living green seriously,” she added.

wwf.org.myEarth Hour is a global environmental initiative that began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2000 businesses switched off their lights for one hour from 8.30pm, to take a stand against climate change. It is usually celebrated on the last Saturday of March.

If 60 Commercial Buildings In Penang Switch Off Their Non-Essential Lights During Earth Hour, The Penang State Government Will Also Plant 60 Trees That Are Endangered Species
As part of the Cleaner Greener Penang initiative, Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang will plant 60 trees of four types of endangered species, namely Anisoptera scaphula, Cratoxylum cochinchinense, Firmiana malayana and Fagrea auriculata at the Queensbay Interchange if 60 commercial buildings in Penang support Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on 29 March.

The Walk Will Start And End At Jalan Padang Kota Lama
The starting point is Jalan Padang Kota Lama, through Lebuh Light, Lebuh Farquhar, Lebuh Leith, Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Pantai, before joining back again to Lebuh Light and ending at Jalan Padang Kota Lama. The Penang Amateur Athletic Association serves as the technical advisor of the walk.

Did You Know: Malaysia Is Losing Forests More Rapidly Than Any Other Country In The World
Malaysia's land surface was once almost entirely covered with forest. Today, forests still cover about 59.5% of the total land area. However, deforestation is a major concern as the country is still rapidly developing. In the 20 years from 1983 to 2003, there was a reduction of about 4.9 million hectare of forest cover in Malaysia. This is about 4 times the size of Singapore - an average of 250,000 hectare of forest being lost annually!
