What Happened When An Unfit SAYS Writer Went To A "Fun" Workout Class

Try a new workout, they said. It will be fun, they said.

Confession time - I've never stepped foot into a gym before in my entire life. Commitment issues and lack of self-discipline aside, the idea of intense workouts and aching limbs the day after just doesn't seem like a fun time, y'know?

I do, however, tag along when my friends decide to go jogging on weekends and do light exercises at home just to keep up the illusion of fitness.

Miraculously, I've also survived a one-off CrossFit challenge and FlyCycle's dynamic spinning class (which I actually enjoyed!), so I guess I'm not that bad.

Despite that, I'll admit that I was curious and maybe a little excited to try out Ministry of Burn's 45-minute MOVE class - the first of its kind in KL - when the newly-opened fitness studio invited us over for a trial

Based in Bukit Damansara, Ministry of Burn offers two types of 45-minute classes - RIDE (a rhythmic indoor cycling class) and MOVE (a mat-based rhythmic HIIT workout choreographed to music), both of which are available for beginner (Easy) and intermediate (Dirty) fitness levels.

Starting off the week strong, the ladies of SAYS and REV Asia signed up for a MOVE Easy class last Monday, 20 November. Here we are, sweat-free and carefree before the class started with our trainer Saira (far right, in grey):

That's me in the salmon-coloured top a.k.a. the only workout-specific top I own.

The studio provides face towels as well as yoga mats and weights, so all you have to bring along is your own water bottle and your pumped up self. :D

Warming up while we wait for the other half of the class to finish their RIDE class. Yep, they did two classes back-to-back. #power

The MOVE class was basically 45 minutes of non-stop full body workout, ranging from squats and jumping jacks to core and arm toning exercises

While I'm proud to report that I did quite well at push ups and jumping jacks, I gotta admit that I had trouble keeping up with the never-ending squats (there were A LOT of squatting exercises) and light weights.

Honestly, I powered (more like struggled) through the last few songs because of our trainer Saira's constant motivation and me not wanting to look like I gave up on life.

On a semi-bright side, it really helped that the movements were choreographed to match the music! Having to keep up with the beats discouraged me from slowing down to a lazy pace, as I am wont to do at home.

I actually did have fun, but this is probably the most intense burn I've ever felt after a workout - my thighs were shaking and I could barely control my legs! Not like you can tell by this after-class photo. :p

I'm not really sad, I'm just being a drama queen. Heh.

I would be in pain for the next few days, especially when it came to going up and stepping down from staircases. At the time of writing, it's been a week since the class and I still feel a dull ache in my thighs, you guys.

All in all, 8 out of 10 would recommend, even if you rarely work out (like me!). Up next, we'll be trying out the RIDE classes... but only when my thighs finally stop burning. ;)

Ministry of Burn is located at 27-1, Jalan Medan Setia 1, Bukit Damansara, 50490 Kuala Lumpur.
