After the government declared that we've transitioned to endemic status back in May, more and more people are starting to travel again

It has been about three years since COVID-19 first affected the world, and all of us were forced to change our way of living as a precaution against being infected by the virus and to control the spread even further.

But since most of us are fully vaccinated now, the government declared that we are transitioning to endemic status. Since then, many Malaysians have gone back to what life was like before the pandemic. And with borders reopened, many have started travelling again, both locally and internationally.

However, some have remained cautious and are still wary about travelling. With COVID-19 cases rising lately and various viral infections circling, there are those who feel like it's still unsafe to be going around freely like we used to.

With peak travel season coming up soon, we're running a survey to find out how Malaysians feel about travelling. Take it below:

Whether you're comfortable with travelling or not, one thing that we can all agree on is that it's still important to take precautions wherever we go, not just from COVID-19, but from other illnesses too

Before COVID-19 hit, did you know that the flu (Influenza) resulted in an annual amount of approximately 290,000 to 650,000 deaths? Scary, isn't it? :O

Similar to COVID-19, influenza is spread through droplets. Common symptoms include severe fever, dry cough, fatigue, muscle and joint pains, headache, and chills, which could last for more than two weeks. Whereas, if you have a common cold, you would get symptoms like sore throat, sneezing, cough, and loss of appetite.

Influenza is especially detrimental to the elderly, those with a weak immune system, pregnant women, and children, as it can cause complications like pneumonia, bronchitis, heart attack, sinus and ear infections, as well as stroke.

It can be easy to catch the flu when travelling, as we spend a lot of time out and about in new locations

Some things you can do to avoid falling sick while travelling includes using a face mask in crowded or high risk areas, frequently washing your hands or using a hand sanitiser, and wiping down or disinfecting areas like chairs or tables. After all, the last thing you want is to be sick on holiday, right?

Additionally, you can also consider getting the flu vaccine before setting off on your trip. The flu vaccine helps to avoid influenza infection and severe complications. Each year, these vaccines are updated to keep up with the constantly-mutating viruses, so you'll be sure to get the latest version that fights off viral flu infections going around.
