8 Places To Check Out If You're Looking For A Furry Companion In Klang Valley

It's important to avoid visiting a pet store if you're looking to add a new furry member to your family.

Unfortunately, because the focus is on generating profit, many cute animals seen in pet stores come from mills or backyard breeders, where there is little regard for the animal's health or well-being.

So, if you're looking for a fur buddy to cherish, consider adopting instead from one of these following places:

Note: If you're unable to adopt a pet, these shelters also welcome volunteers to occasionally help out. Please do not use the following list as locations to dump your animals.

1. Second Chance Animal Shelter, Hulu Langat

This non-profit shelter has saved more than a thousand stray dogs in Selangor and have successfully given 50% of the animals a home. Dogs that suffer from injuries, abuse, and abandonment are returned to full health before being put up for adoption.

2. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Ampang Jaya

This animal welfare organisation not only provides an adoption programme for their animals, but also investigates cruelty reports and runs a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.

They also lobby respective authorities for the humane treatment of animals and for harsher penalties of those who mistreat animals.

3. Malaysia Independent Animal Rescue (MIAR) Shelter, Puchong

Founded in 2008, this non-profit organisation in Puchong is also dedicated to rescuing strays and abandoned animals. They focus on housing animals that never received the care and love they deserve, while finding homes to care for each of them.

4. KL Pooch Resort And Rescue, Kuala Kubu Bahru, Selangor

This self-sustainable animal welfare organisation runs primarily on revenue from boarding and other services. Although, they would love to take in more pooches, space is limited, and their dogs are always in need of loving homes.

5. Furry Friends Farm, Selangor

Formed in 2006, this non-profit organisation shelters is a no-kill* animal sanctuary that rescues abandoned, abused, or stray cats and dogs. Located in Kundang, Selangor, it is home to over 300 dogs, 150 cats, and a goat.

*No-kill animal policy means that they do not kill healthy or treatable animals, even when the shelter is too full to house them.

6. Lost Animal Souls Shelter (LASS), Kuala Selangor

LASS is a non-profit, no-kill canine shelter that houses and cares for more than 250 abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs. If you're looking into adopting a furry companion, drop them a Facebook message or call them for more info.

Opening hours: 10am - 4pm. It is highly recommended for you to contact them beforehand, as the timing often clashes with the dogs' mealtimes.

7. Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Subang Jaya

PAWS is a non-profit animal shelter that takes in unwanted animals and strays. They then neuter/spay, deworm, vaccinate, and put the animals up for adoption.

They are funded through public donations and operate with a team of office staff, part-time veterinarians, vet assistants, kennel workers, and volunteers.

If you're unable to visit an animal shelter, you can also adopt a pet on Pet Finder.
