What happens when you bring together the talents of origami masters from all corners of the world? For Surface to Structure: Folded Forms curator Uyen Nguyen, it’s an opportunity to share her passion for the art form and inspire others to contribute to the legacy of origami.
Origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, transforms a flat sheet of paper into a 3D sculpture without the use of scissors, tape or anything besides good old folding and sculpting.
The Surface to Structure exhibition ran from 19 June to 3 July this year in New York’s The Cooper Union, featuring more than 130 works from 88 artists spanning five continents, including Malaysia’s Ng Boon Choon, Singapore's Ronald Koh and Vietnam's Hoàng Tiến Quyết
The 134 works in the show encapsulate a broad spectrum of origami’s possibilities, both artistic and scientific, and push the perceptions of this art form beyond its traditional boundaries.
