Malaysian Man Spends Every Weekend Feeding About 80 Stray Dogs Near His Home
Maran spends around RM150 per feeding session without relying on community or organisational support.
It all started with a dog named Bruce Lee
In 2019, Maran Archunan, 47, a business owner, noticed a growing number of stray dogs near an industrial area close to his home. He couldn't ignore their hungry eyes, but what truly pushed him to take action was the loss of his own beloved pet.
"We adopted a stray dog and named him Bruce Lee. Unfortunately, he passed away after a year due to a road accident. So, we decided to start feeding the strays in his name," Maran shared.
Since then, every Sunday without fail, Maran dedicates his time to ensuring these dogs get a proper meal.
Maran and his wife feed about 80 strays weekly with their own funds
He spends approximately RM150 per feeding session, preparing 5kg of rice and five whole chickens to nourish around 80 stray dogs. Despite his busy schedule, he makes time for this act of kindness, squeezing it into his weekly routine.
"The only challenge is time. As a businessperson, I need to manage my schedule to make sure I can do this at least once a week," he shared with SAYS.
What's even more remarkable is he carries out this mission on his own, without seeking support from the community or any organisations. However, he has the unwavering support of his wife, Abinaya Ganggunaidu, who stands by him in caring for the strays.
For Maran, this isn't just about providing food for the dogs
Over time, he has built a bond with the strays, seeing familiar faces and forming trust with them.
"Every Sunday, we feed the dogs, and they recognise us now. There's a connection. Bruce Lee inspired us to keep going, and this has become a meaningful part of our lives," he said.
He believes that anyone can make a difference for stray animals, no matter how small the effort
He urges the public to help in whatever way they can — whether it's offering food and clean water, supporting local animal shelters, or adopting strays instead of buying pets.
"If you want to help, just start in your own area. Feed them with whatever you can afford, provide water, and give them a safe spot to rest. Most importantly, be patient. Every small effort counts," he advised.
If given the resources, Maran hopes to expand his efforts to feed more strays, provide medical care like vaccinations, and even help them find loving homes.
For now, he continues his Sunday routine, ensuring that at least 80 dogs don't have to go hungry — one meal, one act of kindness at a time.
