We often joke about how strict Malaysian parents are and how they don't allow us to make our own decisions. But is it really true?
Study hard, go for tuition, do your extracurricular activities, get good grades at school... Sound familiar? On the flip side, did they discourage you to follow your personal interests and passions even though they didn't understand them?
That's what we want to find out!

There's no denying that our parents only want what's best for us because they love us. But sometimes, what they think is best, just isn't going to work out for us.
This is especially the case when it comes to choosing your university course and future career
If you and your parents are on the same page, that's great! But in case your parents need a little convincing to allow you to study what you want, here are some handy tips:
1. Research everything you need to know about the course you're interested in
This includes the subjects you'll cover, the potential career you could have, the financial aid available, and anything else your parents would want to know.
2. Be prepared for all the questions your parents will ask
You know them better than anyone else. What are their main concerns? Is it whether you'll be able to get a job? Or how much pay you'll receive? Maybe they think you'll lose interest in the course mid-way?
Consider the reasons why they aren't on board with your decision, and address them one by one in a clear and concise way. Try not to be overly assertive or defensive.
3. Pitch it to them creatively and professionally
Show them how serious you are about the course of your interest in a fun way! Create a PowerPoint presentation or poster. Add interesting facts and statistics to backup your points.
4. Invite them to join your passion
At the end of the day, your parents just want you to be happy. So let them see how passionate you are about your course! Are you interested in design? Show them your sketch books, doodles, graphics, and artworks. Explain how the industry is growing and what you plan to do with your talent.
5. Choose a quality institution
Find an institution that offers great courses in your field of interest, with excellent facilities in a convenient location. Do your research, visit the open days with your parents, and get first-hand knowledge on the institution.
