Malaysia's public healthcare system offers a wide range of services, usually with low fees or free access

Between rising living costs and the price of private medical care, many Malaysians forget that our public healthcare system actually provides comprehensive coverage for many areas.

From flu meds to childbirth and even mental health care, here's what you're entitled to as a Malaysian citizen:

1. Outpatient and inpatient treatment at government facilities costs as little as RM1

Whether you're just seeing a doctor for flu symptoms or undergoing emergency surgery, government clinics and hospitals have you covered.

What's included:

  • RM1 fee at government clinics (Klinik Kesihatan) for consultation and basic meds
  • No appointment needed, just walk in
  • Emergency services (ambulance, triage, life-saving surgery) are free at public hospitals

Inpatient hospital stay:

  • RM3/day for normal ward
  • First-class ward charges usually range from RM60 to RM90 per day, depending on room type. However, eligible patients may only need to pay RM5 per day, if a first-class ward is available.
  • Includes food, nursing care, consultations, and most medications
  • Surgeries are highly subsidised based on complexity

Free for:

  • Children under 12
  • Senior citizens (60+)
  • People with disabilities (OKU) cardholders
  • Civil servants and retirees
  • Students in public schools

2. Maternal and child healthcare is mostly free and very comprehensive

Expecting parents can access a full range of maternal care and child health services, without needing private insurance or extra coverage.

For mothers:

  • Free antenatal checkups, including urine tests, blood pressure monitoring, scans, nutrition counselling
  • Low-cost childbirth at public hospitals, starting from RM10 for normal delivery

  • Psychiatric consultation and medication at public hospitals

What's available:

  • Free for students, OKU cardholders, and civil servants
  • Adults: RM2 – RM3 for consultation
  • Affordable scaling, fillings, extractions
  • Braces, dentures, and complex procedures available at subsidised rates, though they may involve longer wait times

Here's the bottomline — you don't need to go private to get quality care, you've already paid for it with your taxes
