Who Are The 8 Sultans Behind The Newly Renamed Roads In KL?

Our rulers and kings are actually pretty cool!

This morning, we woke up to news that the DBKL has renamed some of the major roads in the city

To understand the rationale for renaming these roads, we take a closer look at the Sultans, from their accomplishments to their hobbies. Get to know them better:

1. Jalan Tunku Abdul Halim (Jalan Duta). Tunku Abdul Halim is our current Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. Did you know he's a week older than world's longest reigning monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand? The Penang Second Bridge is named after him too!

The bridge was officially opened on 1 March 2014 at 20:30 MST and was named after the fourteen Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah of Kedah and was assigned with the route number

2. Jalan Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (Jalan Khidmat Usaha). Our seventh Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, he's a big fan of football and even had a competition named after him.

The Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup, more popularly known as Charity Cup, is an annual football match contested by the champions of the previous Malaysia Super League season and the winners of the Malaysia Cup. The fixture is ranked below the FA Cup and Malaysia Cup, in terms of importance.

3. Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (Jalan Ipoh). The late Agong was known as the "Father of Malaysian hockey" for his contribution to the sport. Fun fact: He became the youngest ever Lord President of the Federal Court, the highest judicial post in Malaysia.

Raja Azlan Shah was admitted to the English Bar on 23 November 1954. He returned to Malaysia, becoming the Assistant State Secretary of Perak. He joined the Judicial and Legal Service of the Federation of Malaya and soon became the President of the Sessions Court. He continued rise quickly through the legal ranks, serving as Federal Counsel and Deputy Public Prosecutor, Legal Adviser of the State of Pahang, Registrar of the High Court of Malaya, and Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia. In 1965, Raja Azlan Shah, aged 37, became the youngest judge ever appointed to the High Court of Malaya. He was appointed to the Federal Court in 1973. In 1979, he was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Malaya. Finally, on 12 November 1982 he became the youngest ever Lord President of the Federal Court, the highest judicial post in Malaysia.

4. Persiaran Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (Persiaran Duta). The current Raja Of Perlis, the Tottenham Hotspur fan is known for his dedication and care to his people. He holds education in high regard and has created a foundation to help reward deserving students.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin is renowned for his dedication towards his people and takes great interest in education. With the establishment of the Tuanku Syed Putra Foundation in 1986, many Perlis students have been able to further their studies locally and abroad. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin is the Chairman of this foundation. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin is also active in sports. Among his favourite sports are golf, tennis, football and is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur football club. He has been the Chairman of Putra Golf Club, Perlis since May 1971, and the patron of the Association of Football Referees of Perlis since 1967. He was also the Chairman of the Football Association of Perlis for 18 years.

5. Jalan Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin (Jalan Khidmat Setia and Jalan Ibadah). The Sultan became the youngest ruler of a federal state when he became the Sultan of Terengganu in 1998. A mosque in Putrajaya is named after the ruler besides this road.

Mizan became the youngest ruler of a Malaysian federal state when he was appointed as the Sultan of Terengganu on 15 May 1998 following the death of his father, Sultan Mahmud. Mizan was crowned as the 17th Sultan of Terengganu on 4 March 1999.

The "Iron Mosque" features a district cooling system, and fans or an air conditioning system. The mosque employs "architectural wire mesh" imported from Germany and China, which is also constructed at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. The main entrance is strengthened with glass reinforced concrete to increase the integrity of the structure and uses fine glass to create an illusion of a white mosque from afar.

6. Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar (Lebuhraya Mahameru). The late Sultan Iskandar was no stranger to drama with the most controversial one being The Gomez Incident. He was also known for his love for motorbikes. Oh, he also had a peacock as a pet.

He was also known to be a motorbike enthusiast; documentaries on national patriotism would feature Sultan Iskandar, the then-Agong, riding out on a police motorbike and his flamboyant appearance during a few public ceremonies. In addition, he kept a large collection of pets, particularly peacocks, at his Istana Bukit Serene compound, where he lived with the Sultanah.

7. Persiaran Tuanku Ja’afar (Persiaran Mahameru). Tuanku Ja'afar and his family is known as the "Royal Family Of Sports" as they played a wide variety of sports. An international school was named after him as well.

Tuanku Ja’afar and the royal family of Negeri Sembilan are known as the “Royal Family of Sports”. He and his family have shown great interest in cricket, tennis, badminton, squash, hockey and golf within and outside Malaysia. His son HH Tunku Imran has been the President of World Squash for seven years.

Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar (or KTJ) is a co-educational international school in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, founded in 1991. Its Primary School is a day school for pupils between the ages of 4 and 11 while its Secondary School offers boarding for students from the age of 11 to 19. Day schooling is also possible in the Secondary School. It is a British curriculum school, which also has an option for local students to enroll in the national stream, using the Malaysian syllabus. This option is only open for students in Form 5 in the year 2014.

8. Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra (Jalan Semarak). Yahya Petra of Kelantan was the sixth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. He had a suburb and a bridge named after him in Kuching and Kelantan respectively.

The Raja Yahya Petra Bridge in Kelantan was named after him. Besides that, Petra Jaya, a suburb in Kuching, Sarawak was also named after the late Sultan.
