Gurmit Singh Teases New 'Phua Chu Kang' Musical Comedy Coming To KL
"PCK will bring in the games and humour that is expected of him wherever he goes. PCK will also sing and dance..."
Get ready, Kuala Lumpur! The legendary Phua Chu Kang is back, and he's bringing his signature wit, humour, and charm to the stage with The Greatest Showman, a comedy extravaganza not to be missed.
Taking place on 24 and 25 October at the HGH Convention Centre, this variety show promises an unforgettable night of laughter, music, and surprises, as Singapore’s favourite contractor-turned-entertainer heads to KL for a two-night event.
We spoke to Gurmit Singh, the comedy genius behind the beloved Phua Chu Kang, for a sneak peek into what fans can expect
While maintaining an air of mystery around some of the show's finer details, Gurmit made one thing clear: The Greatest Showman isn't your typical musical comedy.
"This is not a musical comedy show in the strictest sense," Gurmit explained. "The show has elements of music, songs, and dance that's brought to the audience in a unique way."
Although he didn't want to give too much away, Gurmit teased that Phua Chu Kang will be doing more than just cracking jokes.
"PCK will bring in the games and humour that is expected of him wherever he goes. PCK will also sing and dance — enough said so we don't give too much away," he hinted.
Phua Chu Kang will be joined on stage by comedian Rizal Van Geyzel and singer-songwriter Russell Curtis, two stars who bring their own flair to the event
"Rizal and Russell will be doing stand-up and songs with a band, respectively. What you get with these three guys is a special spectacular variety comedy show," Gurmit shared.
This unique combination of comedy, music, and audience interaction is set to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience for those attending. Gurmit promised that fans are in for a night of surprises and, of course, plenty of laughs.
Playing Phua Chu Kang for over two decades, Gurmit Singh has mastered the art of seamlessly slipping into character
When asked about his pre-show rituals, Gurmit laughed and said, "I have been doing PCK since 1997. So the mode transfer takes all of a second to get into PCK persona. No such thing as pre-show rituals."
With his iconic yellow boots and curly hair, Phua Chu Kang comes to life almost effortlessly, which is just one reason fans across generations continue to adore the character.
From the 1997 sitcom to this musical comedy show, what's the secret to keeping Phua Chu Kang so fresh and funny all these years?
"That's a good question to which I have no answer," Gurmit replied.
"I wish I knew what it was so I can produce another character and enjoy the same success. But suffice to say, I believe it's a 'perfect storm' where all the elements have come together and made him who he is today — the script, the direction, the persona, the thought process that went into the details of the character."
Most importantly, Gurmit believes that Phua Chu Kang's staying power is rooted in the audience's love for the character.
"The audience has welcomed him with open arms and gusto," he added, reflecting on the lasting impact Phua Chu Kang has had.
Malaysia holds a special place in Gurmit's heart, especially when it comes to Phua Chu Kang
He shared fond memories of the overwhelming enthusiasm Malaysian fans have shown over the years.
"They really show and express their love for him," Gurmit said. "They are excited to get next to him for a photo op, to the extent that when PCK calls for volunteers for a game, they run to the stage! They have no idea what the game is or if there are even prizes. That's not important. What they want is a chance to take a picture with him, and that’s enough. I think that speaks volumes."
It's no secret that Phua Chu Kang has long claimed to be the best in Singapore, JB, and Batam. But now, according to Gurmit, he's ready to expand his territory.
"He [Phua Chu Kang] has been waiting exactly for this moment in his life to conquer KL. And beyond!!!" Gurmit said with enthusiasm.
With Phua Chu Kang at the helm, The Greatest Showman promises to be an unforgettable night packed with humour, music, and surprises. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the Phua Chu Kang phenomenon, this is one event you won't want to miss.
