Kim Pan-gon has announced his resignation as head coach of Harimau Malaya

The South Korean coach made the announcement during a special press conference held at the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) headquarters in Kelana Jaya today, 16 July.

"Today, I have a sad and sorry message to share with everyone. Today, I have decided to step down as head coach of the Malaysian national football team due to my personal commitments.

"I apologise for any disappointment this may have caused everyone," he said.

Under Kim's tenure, Harimau Malaya reached its highest world ranking in 18 years, peaking at No. 130

According to the New Straits Times, Kim replaced Tan Cheng Hoe as head coach in 2022, and was subsequently given a contract extension until 2025.

Kim helped turn Harimau Malaya's fortunes around on an international level, with the team winning 19 out of 35 matches under his time as head coach.

He also led the national team to qualify for the Asian Cup for the first time in 43 years.

With his resignation, FAM is now tasked with finding a new head coach to prepare the national team for the upcoming Merdeka Tournament in September.
