Be aware of the speed limits! The Royal Police Malaysia (PDRM) has begun its nationwide 'Saman Ekor' operation to fine speeders RM300.

According to Berita Harian, the operation, conducted by Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), began on Monday, 21 August.

The operation aims to penalise road users for exceeding the speed limits as stipulated under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act (APJ). The provision allows police to fine offenders a minimum of RM300 and a maximum of RM2,000.

A total of 8,718 summonses were issued on 21 August, the first day of the operation. Of those, a whopping 8,352 were issued to drivers, 44 to motorcyclists, and 322 to commercial and service vehicles.

"A K170A summons notification for speeding over the speed limit will be delivered to vehicle owners according to the address on their driving licences (as opposed to a ticket issued directly to the driver on the spot).

"All (postal summonses) for speeding offences can be settled at any police district traffic offices in the country," Bernama quoted Bukit Aman JSPT deputy director Datuk Mohd Nasri Omar as saying.

The quick method to fine offenders has been dubbed the 'rapid-fire' operation.

JSPT officers will use high-speed cameras to record any road users who violate the set speed limit

Mohd Nasri said driving above the speed limits is one of the main causes of road accidents in Malaysia, as motorists are likely to lose control of their vehicles while speeding.

"All road users are advised to always follow the established regulations and ensure road rules are complied with without compromise," said the Bukit Aman JSPT deputy director.
