The cherry on top? The dress was designed by a Malaysian.

In one of those "you can't make this up" moments — Donald Trump's White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt criticised China while wearing a dress that was made in China

"The President has been very tough on China," Leavitt said during a recent press briefing, where she defended the Trump administration's decision to double tariffs on Chinese imports.

According to Leavitt, Trump was harder on China during his first term.

"There were billions of dollars' worth of tariffs that he implemented on China..."

But the dress she wore that day, a crystal-embellished waffle-knit number from UK-based label Self-Portrait, was itself made in China. And the designer behind the brand? Penang-born Han Chong.

As The Cut pointed out, the USD376 (RM1,660) dress says more than it seems — underscoring the contradiction between the Trump's anti-China rhetoric and the origins of his press secretary's wardrobe.

A Chinese diplomat posted a photo of Leavitt's dress on X, remarking, "Accusing China is business. Buying China is life"

Diet Prada, an Instagram account that exposes questionable practices and trends in the fashion industry, reported that a few of Leavitt's supporters tried to defend her on X, claiming the dress was a dupe.

"Chinese people are notorious for bootleg clothes. It's more likely they copied a luxury brand's jacket."
