Thai Police Arrest Malaysian Suspect In Hat Yai Gold Shop Robbery

The man was arrested while attempting to flee to his son's home in Nonthaburi, Bangkok.

Thai police have on Wednesday, 9 April, arrested a Malaysian man suspected of robbing a gold jewellery shop in Hat Yai

According to Bernama, 6th Police Investigation Division acting chief Pol Col Anusorn Thongsai said the suspect, who allegedly committed the robbery on Tuesday, 8 April, was arrested while attempting to flee to his son's home in Nonthaburi, Bangkok.

"Initial investigations found that the suspect took a bus from Hat Yai to Mochit bus station in Bangkok, before trying to take a taxi to his son's house.

"Police officers arrested the suspect at 6.30pm local time, along with evidence such as gold, a pistol, and several live bullets," said the police chief.

Investigations showed that the suspect had acted alone, riding a motorcycle to rob a gold shop in Plaza Hat Yai at 11.50am on Tuesday

The suspect had used a pistol to scare the shop's employees, and fled with gold worth approximately 7 million baht (RM900,000).

Following the heist, Thai police issued an arrest warrant and tightened border control to prevent the suspect from escaping

According to the police, the 61-year-old has various identities, including a Thai alias, to avoid being detected.

Anusorn said the suspect is currently in remand and will face legal action.
