Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan announced today, 24 April, that this year's National Average Grade (GPN) improved to 4.49, compared to 4.60 in 2023

For context, a lower GPN indicates better results.

He also said that 86,040 candidates, or 22.7%, scored at least a grade C in all subjects — an increase from 83,112 candidates last year.

"The overall achievements of the 2024 SPM candidates are very encouraging," he said during a media briefing at the Education Ministry in Putrajaya.

"This is the best SPM result since we introduced the mandatory pass requirement for Bahasa Melayu and History in 2013."

A total of 378,606 candidates sat for the examination this year, with 14,179 scoring straight A's, an increase from 11,713 in 2023

Azman also noted improvements across the board based on geographical location.

Local candidates saw an average grade increase of 0.11 points, while non-citizen candidates improved by 0.09 points, with only a 0.02-point gap between the two groups.

Of the 95 subjects offered in SPM 2024, 59 recorded improved performance.

English recorded the highest jump in performance (+0.19 points), while Malay Melayu maintained the strongest overall performance with a Subject Average Grade of 3.72.

Moral Education was the only subject that recorded a slight decline, with a marginal drop of 0.07 points.

This year, 402,918 candidates registered for the SPM, including 386,714 first-time candidates. The majority, 344,919, came from Education Ministry schools, reported Berita Harian.
