Engineer Left Severely Hurt After PDRM Helicopter Spirals And Crashes In Tawau

The incident happened at 7.40pm yesterday, 28 February.

Six Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) personnel survived a helicopter crash in Tawau, Sabah yesterday, 27 February

According to Bernama, all six personnel are from the Air Operation Team (PGU).

The police helicopter, Agusta Westland AW139, was travelling from Tawau airport.

It crashed while attempting to touch down at the 14th PGA Tawau Battalion, Jalan Air Panas at 7.40pm.

However, one of the officers was left severely injured

"They only suffered light injuries but the engineer is seriously hurt," said Sabah Police Air Wing Unit commander Ahmad Lokman Abdul Hadi, adding that, "All are being treated at the Tawau Hospital."

Ahmad said other than the pilot and co-pilot, the others onboard were three air observers, reported Free Malaysia Today.

A witness believes that the helicopter was encountering engine failure prior to the crash

The 60-year-old witness, named Wong, said that he heard loud noises in the air when he finished eating at his home located on Jalan Muhibbah Raya. 

When he walked out, he saw the Agusta Westland AW139 turned around several times before crashing at the 14th PGA Tawau Battalion.

The police are currently investigating the case to uncover the reason of the crash

According to Tawau District Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Umbuas, the GPU was at the scene this morning, 28 February.

He added that the police have set up a control centre at the crash site and it is currently managed by the Tawau district police officials.
