"We Lost Everything" — Putra Heights Fire Victim Counts The Cost Of Losing Home & 4 Cars
He and his family had a narrow escape.
One of the victims of the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights is facing staggering losses estimated at RM1.7 million after the massive fire reduced his family home to rubble and destroyed four vehicles
Amirul Azhar Mohd Yasin, 28, said the explosion, which occurred just 50m from their family home in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, turned their Hari Raya Aidilfitri preparations into a nightmare.
"The house has been categorised as a total loss," said Amirul.
Fortunately, his mother-in-law had purchased fire insurance for the property, but the family must wait for a final report from the Fire and Rescue Department before seeking compensation.
"I would say the financial assistance from the government will not be enough. Our losses are tremendous. However, we will try to claim whatever compensation we can once we receive the report from the fire department," the company executive was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.
On the day of the fire, Amirul and his family, including his wife, in-laws, grandmother, siblings-in-law, and 4-year-old nephew, were at home
"We were getting ready to go out for Raya. My father-in-law had just returned with breakfast. If he had been outside any longer, he might have been more seriously hurt," he recalled.
Amirul sustained burns to his back and has since been discharged from the hospital. He added that several family members were also injured in the fire and are still receiving treatment.
"My wife, parents-in-law, grandmother, niece, and brother-in-law suffered more serious injuries and are still being treated in the hospital," he told Bernama.
"We ran from the heat," he said, adding that they are now staying with relatives as they try to rebuild their lives.
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
The fire from the ruptured gas pipeline triggered massive flames visible from kilometres away, melted metal and plastic across the vicinity, and caused ground-shaking blasts that ignited nearby homes:
