On Monday morning, 7 August, a dramatic scene unfolded in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, as officers from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) opened fire with live rounds at a Proton Wira.

The incident happened after the driver refused to stop for an inspection.

A video of the incident that was filmed from a high-rise building near Laman Rimbunan, Jalan Kepong, has since gone viral on social media.

Many netizens were curious about why the police officers had to resort to open fire and why the driver had to escape.

To get you up to speed, here are five things you need to know

1. Two suspects were in the Proton Wira

According to New Straits Times, two suspects were in the vehicle during the incident.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the car chase began near the Segambut bypass in Taman Pusat Kepong at 7.45am yesterday.

Police officers from the Sentul district police headquarters' motorcycle patrol unit ordered the local men to stop at the bypass, but they sped off after being confronted.

"The duo did not stop the vehicle until Laman Rimbunan, Jalan Kepong, when the car knocked into one of the policemen as it was reversing in a bid to escape," said Mohd Shuhaily.

2. Two police officers fired nine bullets at the vehicle's tyres in self-defence and for public safety

While they were stuck in traffic at Laman Rimbunan, two officers got off their motorcycles to stop the suspects from escaping, the city police chief said.

"To ensure their safety, the two policemen had to fire nine shots aimed at the car tyres, causing the vehicle to crash on Jalan Rimbunan, Jalan Kepong," Bernama quoted Mohd Shuhaily as saying.

Harian Metro reported that the police officers had to fire in self-defence and also for the safety of other road users.

4. After getting stuck in traffic, the suspects fled on foot

Mohd Shuhaily said the two suspects got out of the car and fled to a residential area.

They were not caught after the 10-minute car chase.

"Inspection of the vehicle found scrap metal that may have been stolen. We cannot identify the purpose of these items at the moment," revealed the city police chief.

As for the vehicle itself, it is owned by a woman who lent it to another man. However, Mohd Shuhaily said it could not be ascertained whether they have any involvement with the suspects.
