One person died while two were injured after Petronas' Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) in Long Ugui, Lawas, exploded yesterday afternoon, 16 November

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre said that a team from the Lawas Fire and Rescue station was deployed to the scene after receiving a report at 2.50pm, reported Bernama.

"As they arrived at the scene, the operation commander stated that the radius of the fire and explosion was estimated to be 400m. The fire also destroyed a motorcycle, an excavator, a bulldozer, and a truck," he said in a statement.

"One victim identified as Hadi Wiyono was confirmed dead inside the excavator, while two others, Hendrick and Gabriel Meripa, sustained burns on their limbs."

Petronas mentioned that the incident is believed to have involved a third-party contractor undertaking work "unrelated to SSGP operations within the pipeline's right-of-way (ROW) area".

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre extinguished the fire.
