Thailand Now Has 'Non-Stinky' Durians And Apparently They Taste Just As Amazing

A new durian variant that apparently does not 'stink' has been introduced, so now everyone can enjoy durian together-gether

Durians are known for their rich taste and an even richer aroma that may not appeal to all.

Now, non-durian lovers who say they don't like the thorny fruit because of the smell have the privilege to indulge in total deliciousness.

Who knows, this may convert you from a durian hater to a durian lover.

Northeast Nakhon Ratchasima, a city in Thailand, celebrated the 'non-stinky' durian and was awarded the geographical indication (GI) certification on Friday, 15 July

A GI certification indicates a certain product as originating in a given place.

The Park Chong-Khao Yai durian was registered as a GI product last year by the Department of Intellectual Property, reported The Nation Thailand.

According to the farmers, the new variant of the Mon Thong durian strain has a sweet, soft, and dry flesh, but it does not have a strong, pungent smell.

At the opening, 39 farms in the Pak Chong and Khao Yai areas were awarded the GI certificates by Nakhon Ratchasima deputy governor Chusak Chunkoh.

According to South China Morning Post, Thailand is the world's leading durian exporter, sending about USD5 billion (about RM22.3 million) of the fruit to China, its top export destination.

During the launch, durian connoisseurs were invited to taste the 'non-stinky' variant of the very 'stinky' fruit

Miss Universe Thailand beauty queens were also present to make the whole event a little sweeter.

Visitors also toured the durian orchards virtually through the Amazing Durian Metaverse.

Aside from the celebration, visitors also indulged in a durian and fruit buffet for TBH399 (about RM48) for 49 minutes. The fruits were grown in the Pak Chong orchards.
