Mother Of Three Uses Metal Spring As Birth Control And Still Gets Pregnant
The metal spring measured two inches long.
A 31-year old woman in China inserted a metal spring inside her vagina about half a year ago, believing it would act as a birth control device
She hoped the spring would act as an intrauterine device (IUD) to stop her from getting pregnant, reported Daily Star on Thursday, 12 September.
An IUD is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that is put into a woman's womb (also called a uterus) by a doctor or nurse. It releases copper to prevent the woman from getting pregnant, according to the National Health Service (NHS).
The object obviously did not work.
She still got pregnant and went to see doctors in Zhongshan, China, for an abortion.
"She was five months pregnant when she came to us," said the gynaecologist, Fu Junhong, from Minzhong Hospital.
During the examination, the doctors were stunned to discover a two-inch spring stuck inside her.
"We found rings lodged between her vagina and cervix - it was a spring which had already been enveloped by her vaginal tissue," said Dr Fu.

Doctors performed emergency surgery to remove the spring with a pair of pliers. The surgeons had to cut the metal coil into seven parts and remove them piece by piece.
The procedure took 40 minutes.

Dr Fu explained that the woman had found the metal spring on the floor of her workshop six months ago
"She picked it up, gave it a wash, and then inserted it," he said.
Dr Fu added that the woman's actions were "greatly unscientific and very unhygienic".
Fortunately, the woman did not sustain any infections or tissue damage after the operation, and was discharged from the hospital shortly afterwards.
It is not known whether the abortion was carried out.
