Yesterday, 22 June, a woman was arrested after attempting to throw acid on her niece and a policeman

The incident took place at 4.47pm at Taman Impian, Bukit Mertajam when the niece reported that her aunt started behaving aggressively.

A police mobile patrol vehicle rushed to the scene after receiving a call from the niece

According to Bernama, the police tried to get the suspect to come out of the house when she rushed out wielding three knives, attempting to attack them.

The situation went out of control when the police failed to calm her down and she started throwing the knives at them.

“The suspect then tried to flee in her Proton Saga car and while driving out, rammed into one of the policemen's motorcycle,” Nik Ros said as reported by Bernama.

The 51-year-old woman then lost control of her car after a policeman fired a warning shot at the back tyre

The car came to a halt when she crashed into another car in the area.

Bernama reported that when the policeman tried to open the car door, she splashed acid in his direction, missing him.

Police arrested the woman and seized the three knives that the suspect used from the house.

According to her niece, the single mother of one has been suspected of suffering from mental illness for the past year

"The niece said her aunt has been suspected of suffering from mental illness for a year and had even received treatment at the Jalan Perak clinic, here," said the police chief as quoted by Bernama.

"She called us to help her send her aunt to the hospital for psychiatric treatment," he added.

The suspect was sent to Bukit Mertajam Hospital for treatment.
