A man, clad in nothing but his underwear, was caught on camera trying to move his car away from a nearby fire while ignoring frantic shouts from firefighters and police officers at a building carpark in Singapore

The incident happened around 8pm on May 1 at the open-air carpark of Block 111 McNair Road, where a vehicle had caught fire, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Video footage uploaded to Instagram shows police and SCDF personnel yelling at the man to stay away.

In the caption of the Instagram post, the uploader @sgvirality wrote, "When your Civic's in danger and you don't even have time to put on pants. That's real love."

Despite the warnings of "Don't drive!" and "Come out!" from officials, the man opened the door to his car, parked right beside the burning vehicle. He got into his car and drove off, shirtless and barefoot, turning right into the path of SCDF officers who were still setting up fire hoses, as seen in the video.

"A police officer intervened to knock on his car door to get his attention, and to direct him away from the ongoing SCDF operations," police said in a statement on 2 May, reported the Straits Times.

The footage has gone viral, with netizens praising the man's actions and calling out the police for banging on his car door

Some called the man "crazy" for ignoring safety instructions and putting himself at risk, while others commended him for trying to create space and limit the fire's spread, all while admonishing the police.

"It's my life and my responsibility. If I die, it's my problem. If I want to save my car because [a Certificate of Entitlement] is SGD100,000 (RM324,886) and I can't even claim to buy a new one if it's a total loss, [then so be it].

"Didn't find the behaviour of the police right. I would do the same for my car," commented a viewer.

"Was it necessary for the policeman to bang on the car door so hard?" wrote another.

"At least he prevented a chain [fire]. Police watch too many Michael Bay movies. Cars don't explode like dynamite. Chill lah. Let the man save his car that he paid for with his own money," a man commented.
