Just a day after six areas on the peninsula were issued heatwave warnings, Malaysians in several states woke up to thunderstorms and heavy rain, offering a short but welcome break from the heat

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) had on Monday, 2 June, issued a Level 1 heatwave alert for Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak; Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan; and Bandar Baharu in Kedah, all of which have been recording daily maximum temperatures of between 35°C and 37°C for three consecutive days.

But by early Tuesday morning, 3 June, METMalaysia followed up with a thunderstorm warning affecting multiple districts, including areas in Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and parts of Sabah.

The warning, issued at 7.15am, forecasted thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds expected to last until at least 10am in some areas.

According to the department, such short-term thunderstorm alerts are triggered when there are signs of cloud activity capable of producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour for over an hour

While the storms may have cooled temperatures momentarily, METMalaysia's longer-term outlook still shows signs of persistent heat, particularly in inland and northern regions.

As the inter-monsoon season continues to taper off, Malaysians can expect a mix of sweltering days and sudden downpours.

The heat in Peninsular Malaysia right now is no joke. Let's break down why you've been sweating and melting more than usual:
