A total of 6,417 permanent and contract medical officers resigned between 2019 and 2023, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad

The minister revealed this in a written reply to Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran, who inquired about the turnover rate of medical officers within the ministry over the past five years, reported the New Straits Times.

Dr Dzulkefly said 1,046 medical specialists resigned during the period, with 63 others opting for early retirement.

"One of the reasons for these resignations is the offer of employment as lecturers at public universities.

"Other reasons include personal issues, competency matters, and health problems," he said.

Of those resigned, 2,385 were permanent staff and 4,032 were contract appointees, according to the Health Ministry's statistics

Dr Dzulkefly said the figure does not include the 1,086 contract medical officers who resigned to shorten their existing contracts to accept permanent appointment offers and process contract gratuities.

As of 30 June, the ministry employed a total of 298,853 health personnel, including 266,133 permanent and 32,720 contract staff. This total comprises 7,638 medical specialists and 44,155 medical officers, reported Berita Harian.
