A video of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 69, looking unimpressed while sampling durian at Singapore's Newton Food Centre has surfaced online during his recent two-day visit to the island nation

Gates, one of the world's richest individuals, was in Singapore to deliver a speech at the Philanthropy Asia Summit 2025, where he announced that his non-profit organisation, the Gates Foundation, will be opening a regional office in the country, reported CNA.

While in Singapore, he met several politicians, including Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

During his visit, Gates was spotted on the evening of Tuesday, 6 May, exploring local flavours at Newton Food Centre, one of Singapore's most iconic hawker hubs.

He appeared to be filming a show, as he was accompanied by a small entourage and a camera crew. Photos and videos surfaced online show him sampling local staples, including chicken rice, satay, roti prata — and, of course, durian.

His verdict on the king of fruits?

Judging by his expression, it didn't quite win him over.

In a 43-second video making the rounds online, Gates is seen smelling the thorny fruit up close before taking a bite.

Although he doesn't look outright disgusted, his most telling reaction comes at the end of the clip, when he subtly shakes his head.

CNA also pointed out Gates' lukewarm reaction to the durian.

The video does not capture any of his comments, leaving viewers to guess what his final verdict might've been.
