When it comes to comparing Malaysia to our friends across the Causeway, there's always something to be surprised by — and this time, it's ATMs

Yes, the humble mesin ATM.

In a Facebook post, a Singaporean, Tan Kin Lian, shared his experience withdrawing money from an unfamiliar ATM at Senai Airport.

It wasn't a Maybank machine (his home bank), but thanks to Malaysia's MEPS (Malaysian Electronic Payment System), he was able to take out cash without any fuss.

"This is the ATM of an unfamiliar bank. It was the first ATM that I saw at Senai Airport.

"I was able to withdraw cash from this ATM from my Maybank account as it is linked to the MEPS clearing system," he wrote.

Although there was a small RM1 service charge, Tan didn't mind paying it. In fact, he found it super convenient.

"It saves me from looking for the ATM of my bank. This is more efficient than asking individual banks to set up their own ATMs," he explained.

He also pointed out how Malaysia takes it a step further: many petrol stations and convenience stores here are equipped with ATMs that offer cash withdrawals for the same RM1 fee — super handy for when you're out and about.

In contrast, Tan pointed out that things are a little less flexible back in Singapore

Each bank typically maintains its own network of ATMs, which means higher costs and less convenience for users.

So, while RM1 might not seem like a big deal, it's a small price to pay for the freedom to access your cash just about anywhere — something even our neighbours are impressed by.

Did you know you can also exchange your coins for cash at any of these banks?
