You might not realise it, but your pillowcase could be messing with your skin and hair

Some people wake up glowing, while others wake up wondering where all their skincare went. Turns out, the material you sleep on could make a difference — even if it's a small one.

Most Malaysians sleep on cotton pillowcases — they're affordable, breathable, and perfect for our hot nights

Cotton is a favourite for good reason. It's soft, comfortable, and allows airflow, which helps if you sweat while sleeping.

It's also super easy to clean, durable, and comes in a wide range of prices — from RM10 basics to atas hotel-level sheets.

But cotton can also absorb your skincare, while causing a bit of friction on your skin and hair

Because it's naturally absorbent, cotton might soak up your moisturiser and leave your skin feeling drier in the morning. It also creates more friction compared to smoother fabrics, which can sometimes lead to frizz, tangles, or temporary sleep lines.

That said, for most people, it's not a huge problem unless you're dealing with sensitive skin or brittle hair.

Silk is smoother, less absorbent, and helps reduce friction while you sleep

If you're dealing with frizz, dryness, or acne-prone skin, silk might feel like a game changer.

It's naturally gentle and helps your skincare stay on your face — not your pillow. Silk also reduces friction, so your hair glides over the surface instead of getting tangled or pulled.

But silk needs more care, and costs a lot more than regular cotton pillowcases

True silk (not just satin-lookalikes) is delicate — it requires hand washing or a gentle cycle with mild detergent. It also doesn't come cheap. A quality silk pillowcase made from mulberry silk can cost between RM80 to RM300.

Still, many people who've made the switch say it's worth it for the added comfort and self-care feel.

There's no one-size-fits-all — it really depends on your skin type, hair texture, and how much effort you want to put in

If your skin is sensitive, your hair is high-maintenance, or you're trying to make the most of your skincare, silk could be a nice upgrade.

But if you're looking for something breathable, easy to care for, and more budget-friendly, cotton is still a solid choice.

Some people even mix it up — silk for pamper nights, cotton for everyday use. Best of both worlds.

At the end of the day, your pillowcase isn't magic — but it could help you wake up a little fresher
