Proposals are supposed to be a joyous occasion for a couple as it signifies two individuals taking the next step to committing to one another forever.

However, this Taiwanese woman was left in a rather awkward position when her fiancé asked her to share the cost of her engagement ring.

In a confession post submitted on Taiwanese social media platform Dcard on 20 December, the anonymous woman said that she and her boyfriend had been in a stable relationship for four years and money was never an issue for them.

She also revealed that her boyfriend earned a lot of money and she was fine with the way both of them handled their expenses between themselves.

On the special day, the boyfriend popped the question to her with the diamond ring in his hands. His friends were present to witness the moment.

The woman confessed that she felt incredibly happy and accepted the proposal. But, nothing could have prepared her when her fiancé asked her to cover half the cost of the TWD15,000 (RM2,145) diamond ring.

"I've been picking that diamond ring for a long time now. It's okay, you can transfer half the money to me slowly at your own pace," the fiancé told her.

Stunned, the woman asked him why she needed to pay for her engagement ring

"But that's a diamond ring for our engagement. Isn't a marriage proposal a gift from the man to the woman?" the woman asked her partner.

He responded by explaining that the proposal was a celebration for both of them. Therefore, the cost of it should be split between them.

"Marriage is between two of us, shouldn't we share the cost?" he asked.

This caused a rift between the couple and the woman said that she no longer felt comfortable wearing the ring following that, afraid that the fiancé would think that she was taking advantage of him.

The woman also felt that her fiancé wasn't willing to spend money on a special occasion, such as a proposal or marriage ceremony.

After posting her confession, the woman received many comments, telling her that her fiancé was too calculative and that their marriage would be a constant fight on what is fair or not

However, despite numerous netizens pointing out the red flags of her fiance's behaviour, the woman revealed that she does not want to break up with her partner because of the issue and will try to communicate with him.

She hoped that both of them will be able to communicate and come up with clear boundaries and understanding about their finances after they get married.

Relationships are hard to navigate and sometimes, things don't pan out the way you hope it would:
