Batik Air has updated its power bank policy to improve onboard safety

Effective immediately, passengers are allowed to carry a maximum of two power banks in their carry-on baggage.

However, these power banks must remain with the passenger at all times and cannot be placed in luggage stored in the overhead bin or under the seat, according to the airline's statement today, 17 March.

This policy update follows a recent incident on 24 February, where a power bank ignited on a Batik Air flight from Johor Bahru to Bangkok, causing smoke to fill the cabin.

The flight crew and passengers' quick action averted tragedy, but the event highlighted the potential risks associated with the improper storage of power banks during flights.

Power banks are strictly prohibited in checked baggage on all Batik Air flights

This policy follows the International Air Transport Association (IATA) safety regulations, which limit power banks to a:

  • Maximum of 100 watt-hours (Wh)
  • Maximum of 20,000 milliampere-hours (mAh)

To ensure safety, passengers cannot use power banks during flights.

Batik Air also warned passengers to be cautious when carrying auto-magnet charge power banks, as they may pose additional risks

To help travellers comply with the new rules, the airline will:

  • Display safety reminders at check-in counters
  • Reinforce the rules through boarding announcements and in-flight briefings
  • Have check-in staff inspect power banks before boarding to confirm they meet safety requirements
"We appreciate passengers' cooperation in adhering to this updated policy, which aligns with industry best practices to enhance in-flight safety measures," the airline stated.

Passengers are encouraged to check their power banks before flying to avoid last-minute issues at the airport.
