Overprotective mothers. They drive us up the wall. They nag. They pester. But at the end of it all, they'll love us no matter what.

Michelle Yeoh recently shared some of her experiences with her 'overprotective' Malaysian mother growing up. Something that many Asian kids can probably sympathise with.

In an interview on The Graham Norton Show, the actress relayed how she had gone home during the holidays one time and her mother sat her down to advise her to be on stage more often while she was still young (she was 21 at the time).

Confused, Yeoh said that the conversation eventually led to her mum casually informing her that she had signed her up for the Miss Malaysia competition — without asking her.

"She signed the form. So technically, I'm not legit."

Regardless, Yeoh went on to win the competition and earn the beauty contest title in 1983. "I did it to shut her up," Yeoh added, while laughing.

"Because she wouldn't stop about it, we made a deal. If I do this, you are never going to do something like this again," Yeoh said.

During the interview, the award-winning actress also shared how her mother would follow her on all of her dates growing up, before she went to England to further her studies

"Now you have to remember that mums are protective for all the right reasons," she explained.

She went on to share that when she was around 17, Yeoh went on a movie date where her mum sat next to her, while her date sat on her other side.

Sitting with her arms folded, Yeoh suddenly realised halfway through the movie that there were two hands on her thigh — her mum's hand was placed on top of her date's hand, as both of them thought they were holding Yeoh's hand!
