Ed Sheeran Is Going To Court Because Of 'Thinking Out Loud'. Here's Why
The English singer's bid to dismiss the lawsuit has been rejected.
Ed Sheeran's hit, 'Thinking Out Loud' has been a mandatory song at weddings since it came out in 2014. To date, it has over 2.6 billion plays on YouTube.
However, the song has come around to haunt Sheeran himself over four years later, as he has been ordered to face a plagiarism lawsuit for 'Thinking Out Loud'

Reuters reported earlier today, 4 January, that US District Judge Luis Stanton found similarities between 'Thinking Out Loud' and the late Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On' in terms of "bass lines and percussion". The commonness of the harmonic rhythm in the Marvin Gaye hit is also "disputed".
A jury will rule whether Sheeran, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and Atlantic Records should be liable to the estate and heirs of the late Ed Townsend, co-writer of 'Let's Get It On'.
The lawsuit was filed by Townsend's biological daughter in 2016, according to The Independent.
Sheeran then applied to dismiss the lawsuit by claiming that she had no right to file the suit, since she was adopted by another family at birth. However, his request for dismissal has been rejected by Judge Stanton.
Sheeran is also being sued for USD100 million (approximately RM416 million) for the same song by owner of one-third of the Townsend estate, Structured Asset Sales LLC
David Pullman, who owns Structured Asset Sales LLC, is an investment banker who owns part of the copyright to 'Let's Get It On'.
The suit, which was filed in June 2018, claimed that 'Thinking Out Loud' copied the "melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bass line, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation, and looping" of the Marvin Gaye hit.
Meanwhile, Sheeran has reportedly hit back at allegations of him copying Marvin Gaye, calling them "baseless"
The Independent reported him as saying that the chord progressions used in 'Thinking Out Loud' and 'Let's Get It On' are highly common.
